Pets in Fiji

If you are an animal lover like myself, you might be asking “Are Peace Corps volunteer allowed to have pets?”. Or maybe the better question to ask would be is there such a notion as pets wherever you are serving. Either way, my experience has taught me that the term pet is not universal.
While some Fijians do have pets, most animals are for more practical purposes. Take for example chickens, cattle or pigs. Chickens, cattle, and pigs are raised or sold to feed a family. Dogs are primarily for hunting in the village or keeping away unwanted visitors. And cats keep away pesky mice. So here in Fiji, the term pet should be used rather loosely. However, if you would like to have a pet as a volunteer the choice is entirely up to you!
